Canon Update: Kazumi Magica Official Translation
Because I apped Kazumi at a time when only the fan translated Kazumi Magica manga was available, there are a few things that were inaccurately translated or outright mistranslated that lead to some vital information being either misunderstood, or misinterprited in my app! But now that I have the officially translated manga, I can fix these.
- Umika and Kaoru are middle schoolers, not high schoolers. In the scanlation of chapter one, Kaoru and Umika call themselves 'high-schoolers' -- this is corrected in the official translation and they call themselves 'middle school students'. This means they're closer to Kazumi's age than the scanlation implies. However, --
- Kazumi is younger than Kaoru and Umika. Because of the above, it's made clearer that, in the final volume, Kazumi is attending the same middle school as her friends. She does not seem to be in their class though and combined with her overall appearance and personality, this implies to me that she's a year or two younger than Kaoru and Umika. Because of this, I'm correcting her age as of the end of Kazumi Magica to thirteen -- though this is kind of a moot point, seeing as she'll be aging up to 14 on the thirteenth of this month, anyway.
- Kazumi can speak Italian. Michiru Kazusa was living overseas with her parents when her grandmother fell ill (vol. 3) and was also coming up with Italian names for her and the Pleiades' attacks on the fly, implying that she speaks Italian. Kazumi does the same in volume five, coming up with Italian names for her new attacks, which probably means that she can speak Italian, as Michiru can.
- Kazumi and honorifics - In volume one, until she learns Tachibana's name, she refers to him using the friendly but polite 'onii-san' address. In the scanlation, this is rendered as 'mister', making her sound a bit more formal. She also continues to call him 'Tachibana-san' once she learns his name, implying that she's quite polite in her use of honorifics. She does not use any honorifics with the Pleiades.
